Novelty seeking, risk taking, and related constructs as predictors of adolescent substance use: an application of Cloninger's theory.

چکیده
This study tested derivations from Cloninger's (1987a) theory of substance use on a sample of 457 adolescents. A 67-item adaptation of the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ) and measures of 10 related constructs were administered together with measures of tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana use. Factor analysis indicated that the TPQ comprised nine subscales. An interaction for TPQ dimensions indicated that substance use was particularly elevated for persons with high novelty seeking, low harm avoidance, and low reward dependence. TPQ scales converged with constructs from other theoretical systems, being correlated with measures of behavioral undercontrol, risk taking, impulsiveness, anger, independence, life events, tolerance for deviance, and sensation seeking. Implications for substance abuse theory are discussed.

OBJECTIVE To identify robust predictors of drug dependence. METHODS This longitudinal study included 2361 male and female twins from an ongoing longitudinal study at the Center for Antisocial Drug Dependence (CADD) at the University of Colorado Boulder and Denver campuses. Twins were recruited for the CADD project while they were between the ages of 12 and 18. Participants in the current stud...
متن کاملRelationships between Cloninger's biosocial model of personality and the behavioral inhibition/approach systems (BIS/BAS)
Novelty seeking and harm avoidance are two major temperamental dimensions from the Cloninger's biosocial model of personality that are theoretically related to Gray's behavioral approach system (BAS) and behavioral inhibition system (BIS), respectively. The revised version of the temperament and character inventory (TCI-R) and the Carver and White BIS/BAS scales were developed to assess these c...
متن کاملSensation seeking predicting growth in adolescent problem behaviors.
There is limited literature on the relationship between sensation seeking and adolescent risk behaviors, particularly among African Americans. We tested the association between psychometrically-derived subscales of the Zuckerman Sensation Seeking Scale and the intercepts and slopes of individual growth curves of conduct problems, sexual risk taking, and substance use from ages 13 to 18 years by...

Objectives The current study investigated the structural relationship between Self-Injurious Behavior in adolescents,Temperament,Emotion Regulation, perceived parenting. Methods The study was conducted in 2017-2018 consisting of 396 students (male and female) with their age ranging from 13 to 17 years old. They were selected by using the Cluster sampling method, and were assessed on Autism Spe...
متن کاملTemperamental predictors of developmental trajectories of inattention and hyperactivity–impulsivity problems in schoolchildren
BACKGROUND The current study aimed to examine the temperamental predictors of developmental trajectory subgroups of children's inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity problems through a short-term longitudinal study. METHODS Children (n = 1344) were divided into younger (age 6-8 years) and older (age 9-11 years) groups in order to observe changes in inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity...
